Activities of TNSCST

1. Science and Technology Projects

The objective of this scheme is to support promising research and development projects which are socially relevant and have immediate application to find solutions to socio-economic problems. Under this scheme financial assistance is provided for a maximum of 3 years duration to scientists and researchers working in any of the educational institutions/industries/ voluntary agencies within the State recognized for carrying out R&D projects. The work should be of applied nature and generally should have social relevance and usefulness to our State. Every year about 10-15 projects in various development sectors such as Agriculture, Environment, Physical Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Biological Sciences, Veterinary Sciences & Medical Sciences etc., are supported.

Joint projects with DST, Govt. of India

The State Council and Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India jointly implement projects at various educational and research institutions in our state particularly in areas which are relevant to our needs. The DST is extending 100% financial assistance for these projects.

 

2. Popularization of Science Activities
The objective of this scheme is to popularize the benefits of Science and Technology, among school children, farmers, public and others. Under this scheme financial support is provided to Schools, Colleges, Universities and Voluntary Organizations to conduct Science Exhibitions, Teacher Training Programmes, Popular Lectures, Video/Slide Shows,Quiz competitions on various aspects of Science and Technology, Environmental Awareness, Health Awareness programs etc. Matching grant is obtained from the National Council for Science and Technology communication, Department of Science and Technology.
3. Travel Grant to Young Scientists
The objective of this scheme is to encourage young and budding scientists and researchers to participate in National/International conferences and present their research findings. This scheme will enable the scientist/researchers to update their knowledge and plan their research problems comparable with those which are in progress in other parts of the world. Under this scheme Scientists and researchers below 40 years of age and working in Organisations (University/ College/ Research Centre) located within the State of Tamilnadu are provided with 50% of air fare or Rs.30,000/= ,which ever is less, to attend International Conferences and 100% train fare (First class) to attend National Conferences. About 15 to 20 Scientists are supported every year through this scheme.
4. Young Scientists Fellowship Scheme
The objective of this scheme is to encourage Young Scientists and equip them with knowledge of latest techniques and developments in their fields of research. Selected scientists can undergo training/learn sophisticated instrumentation techniques or modern research methodologies or do collaborative research work with senior scientists in any of the high level research centres/ universities in India. This scheme helps them to update their knowledge and disseminate the same to their students. The Students are thus provided high quality education. Under this scheme scientists and researchers below 35 years of age working in educational Institutions are provided with a fellowship of Rs.3000/- every month for a period of 2 to 6 months in addition to their regular salaries provided by their parent institutions. About 15 scientists are supported under this scheme every year.
5. Partial financial assistance for the conduct of Seminar/ Symposia/ Workshop
The objective of this scheme is to foster exchange of scientific knowledge and also facilitate interaction between various groups of people such as teachers, scientists, industrialists, research scholars and others. Under this scheme partial financial assistance is provided to educational institutions within the State of Tamilnadu . Every year about 30 to 40 such programmes are supported by the Council.
6. Assistance for S&T Publication
The objective of this scheme is to bring out scientific publications in Tamil especially useful to children and general public. Under this scheme financial assistance is provided to organizations publishing such magazines/books which help to spread science and technology among children and the mass. Financial assistance is also provided to scientists to bring out text books in Tamil for the use of students. Encouragement is given to teachers in colleges throughout Tamilnadu to bring out Science and Technology publications in Tamil which will foster creative talent among students particularly in rural areas. Every year about 5 magazines/ books are supported through this scheme.
7. Student Project Scheme
The objective of this scheme is to develop and utilize the tremendous student talent and potential available in our State and to use them for solving specific Science and Technology problems relevant and useful to our society. Under this Scheme financial support is provided to encourage students who have dissertation work in their regular curriculam to take up useful minor research projects during their U.G/P.G courses of Science/ Engineering/ Medicine/ Agriculture/ Veterinary Science. They are provided with a grant of Rs.5000/- to 10000/-. About 150 to 175 projects are given every year. Seminar-cum-exhibition of the projects undertaken by the students is organized every year. The students present their findings before the peer group. Prizes are given to selected projects and models. The programme is organized for two days at an institution in Tamilnadu.
8. Tamilnadu Scientist Award
The objectives of this scheme is to encourage and honour scientists and researchers who have contributed significantly in their fields of specialization through their skill pioneering and outstanding applied research work and other such activities leading to S&T development in the State. Selected scientists are given Rs.10,000/- in cash and a citation. Awards are given every year in different disciplines such as (I) Agriculture (ii) Life Sciences (iii) Chemistry (iv) Engineering and Technology (v) Environment (vi) Medicine (vii) Mathematics (viii) Physics (ix) Social Sciences and (x) Veterinary Sciences.
9. Young Student Scientists Programme

The main aim of the scheme is to identify students who show potential and expose them to the scientific environment of the universities and research institutes. Under the scheme 40 young students studying IX std. in Government and Panchayat Schools located in our State are selected based on the performance in a written test containing objective type questions. They are given special exposure to science subjects such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, environmental sciences and computer sciences for a period of one month during summer vacation (May) by highly qualified faculty members of the Universities or Colleges.

The students are given theoretical instruction during morning sessions and the afternoons are spent on practical work where they are allowed to do the experiments independently. Each student is attached to a mentor who will guide him or her in pursuing a scientific career. An exhibition of the models made by the students during the course is arranged during the valedictory function of the programme. The students are provided with boarding and lodging at universities or colleges in the districts where the programmes are organised.

10. Patent Information Centre

With financial support from the Technology Forecasting and Assessment Council, DST, Govt. of India, a Patent Information Centre is functioning in the Council.
The objectives of the Patent Information Centre are:

To create awareness about Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) especially patents, in the State of Tamilnadu & neighboring region of this Centre and enable patent searchers for the universities, Govt. departments & R&D Institutions in the State and around.

To analyze the patent information on a regular basis and suggest new R&D

programmes based on such information.

 Guide the inventors in respect of patenting their inventions.

11. Technological Innovation & Dissemination
Under this programme the Council identifies few projects in the final stages of research work, the results of which can be taken to the field so that they reach the endusers. Training programmes and workshops are organized for this purpose and the technology developed at various universities and colleges are disseminated.
12. In-Service Training Programme
Under this programme school teachers are given in-service training in subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics etc. so that the updated syllabus in the school curriculam can be taught effectively to students.
13. Entrepreneurship Development Programme
Under this programme entrepreneurship development in various sectors such as Engineering and Technology, Fisheries, Agriculture, Veterinary, Medicine etc where employment opportunities/ livelihood could be created and are organized in Technical Institutions, Universities and Science Colleges.
14. National Technology Day
Under this programme various activities such as seminars, exhibitions, workshops and other awareness programmes are organized to recognize the successful development and testing of nuclear bomb technology in Pokhran by our nation.
15. Creation of Scientific Awareness
The objective of the programme is to create the Scientific Awareness among the rural school students, rural farmers and Self Help Groups. The latest developments, techniques and innovations of Science and Technology are imparted to the Students. The findings of the research work carried out in the research Institutions and Universities are transferred to the concerned people for their upliftment of economic status. The programmes are implemented through NGO’s in all the districts of Tamilnadu. Scientific awareness is created through, Science Exhibitions, Special Lectures and Training programmes.
16. Technology Innovation and Dissemination

Large number of research projects are being carried out in our state in universities, research organizations and colleges leading to innovation in various subjects with significant potential for field applications.

Projects in the final stages of research work in areas such as fisheries, food processing, agriculture, engineering and technology, environment, health etc. wherein innovations with potential for field applications have been successfully achieved are disseminated. Innovative technology reaches end users through suitable training / workshop. Scientists from identified research centers are involved in organizing these programmes on various aspects in development sectors which will enable to unemployed youth, women and farmers to commercialize the technologies and thus earn their livelihood.
